Retaining Your Rock Star Employees

If you want to retain your top employees you have to make them a part of the company.  Let them know how the business is doing. "Rock Stars" want to contribute to the company’s future success in tangible and robust ways, but they need to know where to start and where you want to go. When you are open about things – the good, the bad, and the ugly – and encourage them to join you in making things better, amazing things will happen.

  • Communicate frequently and in a number of ways, not only about your financials, but about your aspirations and expectations for the organization.
  • Demand that employees ask questions, and reward them when they ask the tough ones that point to necessary challenges to be overcome.
  • Listen to their recommendations, concerns and challenges.  They may not be the ones to formulate a plan but they are closest to the customers and to the processes.
